Welcome to Chemistry 1!
Dear Students and Parents,
Chemistry 1 is a challenging course that requires a strong work ethic from students. It is imperative that students continuously review and study material, and avoid cramming for tests. Please take a few moments to review the chemistry classroom guidelines and you will see the demand students must put into class assignments and especially preparing for tests. The second semester of chemistry 1 is much more math based and leads to additional challenges for the student. Students that have struggled academically, especially in mathematics or Algebra I, will need to work even harder in order to be successful in chemistry. If students need additional assistance, the use of study round up and tutoring is strongly encouraged.
A significant amount of class content can be located with the Blackboard Online program. This serves as an excellent resource for class notes, video help, class tests and or quizzes and more. It is important that students have periodic access to a computer in order to use this valuable learning tool. See the helpful sites tab above for more information about Blackboard and logging on.
Throughout this course students will be performing labs that require the use of hazardous materials. Students will be made aware of numerous safety guidelines, must sign a safety contract, and must pass a safety test prior to working in the lab. Before each lab the proper use of safety equipment and the handling of hazardous materials associated with the lab will be reviewed. Please be aware that accidents can and do occur and that I suggest students not wear their best or most expensive clothing on lab days.
Please be sure to help monitor progress in chemistry (and the rest of the classes) by checking Parent Portal early and often. Go to www.wcskids.net click on the Parent/Students tab and select Parent Portal or use the direct Link to Parent Portal... http://www.wcskids.net/parentportal/ . You will find directions to register and access the Parent Portal site if you have never used it before. Parent Portal includes information on your student's grades and attendance for all classes in which they are enrolled. If any items in Parent Portal are highlighted in blue text, you may click on the link for more information.
If you have questions or concerns about your students progress, please do not hesitate to contact me.
